David has been advised to run for it. There have been threats to his life and all the upright are in danger of being shot. When the foundations of society are dismantled (law and order, family life, stable government, moral vision) the righteous are too small and powerless to make any difference. That's what his well-meaning (?) associate has told him.
(Having flown away to Russia for the Brexit crisis I'm not sure I should be writing this blog.)
David's answer is that the ultimate reality has not changed; that the Lord is still in his holy temple; the Lord is still on his heavenly throne. He has not left the earth and He reigns over all. His inaction is not a loss of concentration or control or interest. He surveys everything and everyone on earth. The righteous pass his examination but He will take out the wicked, especially those who use violence and spread fear and terror.
While the Lord is on the throne, responds David, I am staying put as His representative, the salt of the earth and light of the world.
Jesus was also told to run because his life was in danger from Herod, which he met with a very similar retort. Luke 13v32 “Go tell that fox that I will keep on casting out demons and healing people today and tomorrow; and the third day I will accomplish my purpose." Let us too look to the throne for strength to get into the world, the school, shop, office, hospital, sports club, to do God's will. Evangelism not escapism.
Ultimately there are two destinies; the fire of God or the face of God. (vv6,7) Get this and we will witness without fear.
