Psalm 127: Don’t worry. God is sovereign. He will bless His people and build His church.

This Psalm talks about

Building. Watching.

Blessing and children.

Man proposes but God disposes.

A major theme is Don’t worry. God is sovereign. He will bless His people and build His church.

Throughout the Psalm proclaims that God is omnipotent and only what is from God will last. We must not build on sand but on rock (petra), the rock of ages.

What do you worry about? Jesus said in Matthew 6:25-34:

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labour or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendour was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

God knows our needs. He is omniscient. God can. He is omnipotent. He is the alpha and the omega. He is omnipresent. And he loves us like a perfect father should love his children.

Solomon built the temple. Nehemiah rebuilt Jerusalem. Jesus is building His global church of which we are part. As we build our lives let us remember that He is sovereign and omnipotent and unless he builds all is in vain. But less us not put down trowel or sword. Let us keep building and guarding.

As we build with trowel we have to stand watch and guard. But we are not alone for God is with us. Nehemiah experience the goading and plotting of others but he stuck to his task and succeeded with God’s help.

The Psalm moves from builders, in Hebrew this is the word bônîm (builders) to sons, the similar Hebrew word bānîm (sons). Throughout the Psalm proclaims that ‘only what is from God is truly strong’.

And why build if we cannot pass it on to the next generation, whether we have our own children or not. Jesus said ‘On this rock I will build my church’. The rock or Petra is the truth of The words “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

And our labours will prosper.

Psalm 128:

‘Blessed are all who fear the Lord,

who walk in obedience to him.

You will eat the fruit of your labor;

blessings and prosperity will be yours.’

So why worry now?

As the Proverb says:

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart

and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

Amen
