I've been reading John Owen on The Glory of Christ. Owen spent his life straining to see the glory of Christ, often feeling like a little boy asking to sit on the shoulders of others to see more. Psalm 21 is a Psalm to sit on for a better view.
It's about The Lord (You) The King (He), his enemies (they) and us (we) just at the end. It is David's effervescent praise for the victories God gave him, saving his life in the process, but The King who would sing this song authentically, would never see his last day. (v4) Prophetically then, it is the scene of Jesus' enthronement following his earthly campaign against the forces of evil. In response to Jesus' faith and prayer God gives him a royal reception with unimaginable glory, welcomes him with untold and unending blessings and greets Him with a crown of pure gold, Surpassing even the joy of The King's victorious campaign is his delight to be home in the company and love of The Most High.
Verses 8-12 are clearly prophetic being all in the future tense. There is an intense, decisive battle. When The King appears on the frontline He and the Lord will take out all his enemies and nullify all their strategies. This will mean that all of humanity will be free from their regime of oppression and death. As Paul writes, "Death has been swallowed up in victory! The sting of death is sin", but now The King has removed it by being stung for us and overcoming its effects. "Thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." We will indeed sing and praise your Might! Not just now but for ever.
On the morning he died ("in the quiet village of Ealing", my birthplace) Owen's publisher visited him with the news that his Meditations on the Glory of Christ was ready for publication. Owen responded, I am glad to hear it, but, brother, the long wished for day has come at last, in which I shall see that glory in another measure than I have ever done or was capable of doing in this world."

Thanks Tim. We definitely like David, have every reason to rejoice, express gratitude and be thankful for our Lord's saving grace and the victory we have in Him that overshadows our momentary troubles, needs and desires.
