Question: Who are the only truly happy people?
Answer – Those who are forgiven
The psalmist is offering his testimony to support the theme.
People sin and so often the action which follows is their covering it up.
Is that something you do? What method / tool / skill do you use to cover up your sin.
Are you aware of it?
Well for those that know the Lord and have the Holy Spirit living within them, self-covering sin will hurt and ache within your body and soul vs 3 and the Lord loves his children and therefore his hand is heavy upon them vs 4.
David found that for himself and came to a point where he wanted to seek his Father and open his heart. This is not something he did once, but something he often found himself needing to do.
He ‘Acknowledged’ his Sin, he no longer ‘covered it up’ and he ‘’confessed’ vs 5.
You and I now read this and are challenged by the same 3-step process.
Do we have sin in our lives which we are not acknowledging? are we covering it up? Are we willing to confess and trust in God’s forgiveness? Strange how we are tempted to roll on unchanged and unchallenged!
Well David is wanting us to see his thankfulness, his gratitude in this psalm and how by trusting the Lord with our sin, that we become free and truly happy (blessed) His confession leads to him developing a deeper and more fulfilling relationship with God. One in which God then gives his guidance and direction.
Our sins not only become covered by him, as if they are still with us but just covered, but they are not counted against us (vs 2), forgiven therefore removed, cleared, cleaned, forgotten (vs 1, 5)
God hides us, preserves us from trouble, surrounds us with ‘shouts of deliverance’ (vs 7)
God will instruct us and teach us (vs 8), Counsel us and keep his eye on us (vs 8)
Steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the Lord (vs 10)
Imagine our Father, upon confessing our sin, gathering us in his arms, wiping us clean from sin, loving us dearly and guiding us forward in freedom and purpose.
This comes to those who firstly acknowledge their sin. When the sin is acknowledged they refrain from covering it up and they pray on their knees to confess to God. That person has chosen to Trust in the Lord (vs 11)
….Is the hand of our Father heavy upon you?
Speak to the Lord now and find the same forgiveness that led David to be one who wrote the final verses…
Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, or Righteous and shout for joy all you upright in heart!
