Social media has turned boasting into an art form. Look at my life - don't you wish you were hot like me? No pressure then. But Psalm 34 is a man boasting in a way that will help the afflicted. "I will boast in the Lord; let the afflicted hear and rejoice... Join me and we can magnify Him, (big him up) together. vv2,3 (This is the magnification of a telescope rather than a microscope. We see Him nearer to His true size.)
Why is his boast a boost to life's strugglers, all of us at times. This psalm comes from the time David, on the run from King Saul, sought asylum with the Philistines. This was fine until they realised they had a very valuable hostage Saul would pay good money for. David feigned insanity and the king threw him out as he didn't need any more mad people in the palace. David could have posted about his oscar winning performance or boasted about his adventures in Gath but he gives all the credit to the Lord. He tells us, I'm no one special, was in big trouble and cried out to the Lord. Guess what? He answered me and delivered me from the threats to my life and my worst fears. Try Him for yourself. He's the best thing in my life and I really recommend Him. We boast about our kids, football team, holidays. We recommend movies, websites, clothes lines. When was the last time we recommended Jesus to someone? Shared how He's helped us when we were on the floor? That might be just the boast someone needs to hear today.
