Psalm 72 - Look to the King!

doug.allord

As a parents, we want the very best for our children, and King David was no exception when it came to Solomon.

In this Psalm he asks God to bless his soon-to-be king son, Solomon, with justice and righteousness; to be a man who extends these for the welfare of the nation.

He asks God to bless the land of the nation with fruitfulness. He asks God for longevity for the king’s reign.

But then in this song of prayer beseeching God’s favor, a very beautiful thing is comes to light. It becomes clear from his language that this is no regular king.

Through the Spirit, David’s prayer becomes a prophetic glimpse at the future coming King of kings – the promised Messiah.

His rule shall be unending – through all generations, His rule shall be global – to the ends of the earth.

Instead of falling at his feet to worshipfully kiss them, His enemies will “lick the dust” – they will fall slain at his feet, just like the pronouncement of curse God placed on the serpent in Genesis 3:14.

In this song, we see David’s heart-longing for a perfect king – one who can only be fulfilled in the Messiah.

He will be the true ruler.  The kings of the earth will bring their tributes to him (v10, Revelation 21:24), and “all kings bow down to him and all nations serve him.(v.11)

That he is no mortal king comes to bloom in verse 17 – “all nations will be blessed through him, and they will call him blessed” – directly recalling the Messianic promise God gave to Abraham in Genesis 22:18 that “through your seed all nations on earth will be blessed.”

“Seed” being a singular descendant, and the words ‘they will call him blessed’ and “will be blessed” can both also be translated as “will use his name in blessings.”

By the Spirit, David asks for God to make his soon to be earthly king, like the perfect Messiah king he is to represent and foreshadow.

If today you walk through difficulties or sorrows or the longing for perfection to come, remember that even today, Christ to us is “like rain falling on a mown field, like showers watering the earth.” (v. 6)  He alone can bring refreshment, nourishment, and life to our souls.

In this song, David lifts his heart and eyes to the fulfillment of the promise of God – when justice and righteousness and peace and abundance are perfected forever.

Let us do the same.

“Praise be to the Lord God, the God of Israel,     who alone does marvellous deeds. Praise be to his glorious name for ever;     may the whole earth be filled with his glory. Amen and Amen.”
